I would just like to make one serious point here which is that computers, along with most other electronic goods these days, should should have real OFF switches which act at the mains power input rather than "downstream" of the power supply. Most computers, TV, HiFi etc are plugged in behind bookcases/sofas etc and are a pain to get to, unlike a switch on the front of the machine.
In fact it is also perfectly possible to design a power supply which would reduce power consumption to practically nothing yet still allow a trickle of power (a small fraction of a watt) for "essential" uses if needed when switched off. I am wondering when we will see apple proudly announce this "breakthrough" when the technology to do it has been around for at least 20-30 years.

Interesting and well written article. I always wondered if sleeping is better than shutting down. Since I learned that holding the play / pause button on the apple remote puts the computer to sleep , that's what I've been doing ever since. It does make sense to say that it's better to shut down and unplug - it's proven that unplugging any appliance does stop the flow of energy thus uses less electricity.

I'll definetly try and shut down now instead of lazily putting my computer to sleep from
across the room.
