Recording the broadcasts:
Now that we know how to find and listen to internet stations, what about saving them for listening later on. Also, in the case of foreign broadcasts, how do we time-shift these broadcasts so we don’t have to be awake at 3am to listen?

Let’s look at some software we can use. Each option has its own advantages and disadvantages:
- Soundflower – Free – Does not feature timed recording.
- Audio Hijack Pro – $32 – Does not feature timed recording.
- Wiretap Studio – $69 – Will do timed recording.
- iRecordMusic – $25 – Will do timed recording.
- Streamripper – Free – Will do timed recording (CLI only).

Real-Time recording only:
For basic recording in real time, my recommendation is the free software SoundFlower by Cycling74. SoundFlower is a simple audio router. Basically what it does is pipe audio from one application into another (Your recording software). To record you will need to use it in conjunction with recording software – Audacity is recommended but Garageband will also work.

Here’s how to record audio using SoundFlower:

1. Download Soundflower from the Cycling74 website.

2. Run the Installer and enter the Administrator password when asked.

3. After installation, restart the computer.

4. Go to the System Preferences and choose Sound. You will see new inputs/outputs.

5. Choose Soundflower 2ch as the default input and output.
Note: If you use the internal microphone for Skype or anything else, be sure to change the input back when you are finished.

6. Load up iTunes and choose a radio station.

7. Load up Audacity (or Garageband) and choose the “Default Input”

8. Play your radio station in iTunes.

9. Press record in Audacity and press stop when finished.

You can now edit and save your audio stream as you see fit.

For someone who wants an easier to use, one click package, I recommend Audio Hijack Pro by Rouge Amoeba. The only real disadvantage of Audio Hijack Pro is that it does not do timed recording. Perhaps in a future release this may be supported.
