Method 02 - OS X Leopard Sharing

Note: In my experience, I’ve always had to restart the Mac in order to get the connection to work. Also make sure all firewalls are turned off (OS X’s is under the Security System Preference in Leopard).

14. Enter your username and the password you created when you turned on sharing.

15. Your user folder will open up.

Method 02 - OS X Leopard Sharing

Note: You may see a bunch of strange files. (.DS_Store, etc) Do not delete them. They are important files that are hidden from you under OS X. Ignore them. You also won’t need to copy them onto your Windows machine. Windows doesn’t understand them.

Method 02 - OS X Leopard Sharing

Very Important: If you are copying pictures, do not copy the files beginning with a period (.). They aren’t your pictures. Scroll down and after all the files that begin with a period, you will find your pictures. The period files are OS X’s thumbnail data and are named the same as your picture files. It can be confusing the first time to see and I know more than a few people who have copied the thumbnail files only and then deleted their pictures. Be careful.

16. Transfer the files you need.

17. Close the folders on the Windows machine.

18. To turn off file sharing on the Mac, go back to the System Preferences and choose sharing.

19. Uncheck the checkbox next to File Sharing to turn it off.

Special Note: Filevault users
If you are using Filevault to encrypt your home folder, you can only access it from a Windows machine if you are logged in to your user account on the Mac. If not, it will appear as a large .sparseimage file and Windows won’t be able to open it.
