The Simplest, Easiest, and Cheapest Way to Transfer Files between PCs and Macs

Method #1 – Sharing from the PC, Transferring from the Mac:
1. On the PC, Double-Click on My Computer.

2. Right-Click on the C: Drive (or whichever drive you want to copy from)

3. Choose “Sharing and Security”.

Note: A warning may pop up about sharing the entire drive. Click on the warning to proceed. Its OK, when we are finished we will turn the sharing off.

4. Click on “Share this folder on the network” and click “OK”.

Note: If you are going to be sending files to the PC or erasing them from the Mac, check the checkbox next to “Allow network users to change my files”.

5. Click on “Start” then choose “Settings” and then choose “Network Connections”.

6. Right-Click on the “Local Area Connection” icon and choose “Status”.

Note: If you are going to be transferring wirelessly, choose Wireless Connection instead of Local Area Connection.

7. Click on the “Support” tab and write down the IP Address for your PC.

Note: Make sure to turn off any type of Firewall (Zone Alarm, Windows Firewall) or Internet security software (Norton, McAfee) running. If not, they will cause connection problems.

8. On your Mac, in the Menu Bar, click on “Go” and choose “Connect to Server” (Apple-K)

9. In the Server Address field, type: smb:// and the PC’s IP Address.

10. An authentication prompt may appear. Type in your PC’s username and password.

11. Your C: Drive will now be mounted on the desktop just like when you mount a portable hard drive or USB flash drive.

12. Transfer the files you need. To find the Desktop, My Documents, and other folders, open the “Documents and Settings” folder. Then open the folder with your username.
Note: If you have a large amount of files, it may take some time. 1-4 minutes per GB if using ethernet cables. 5-8 minutes per GB if wireless. If it will take an extreme amount of time, make sure both the Mac and PC have sleep mode and any screen savers turned off. If they fall asleep, the transfer will fail. The screen savers may slow the transfer down significantly.

13. When you are finished, Eject the fileshare.

14. To turn off sharing on the PC: Right click on the C: Drive, choose “Sharing and Security”

15. Click on “Do not share the folder” button and click OK.
