Step 2: Set up Garageband for recording.
Garageband is a great audio tool for recording projects like this.
- First, plug in your iMic if you haven’t already. (iBook G4 and earlier only)
- Second, load up Garageband and create a new project.
- Third, go to the Track Menu and Delete the “Grand Piano” track that appears:

- Fourth, go back to the Track Menu and Create a new Basic Track.

Step 3: Set up your stereo.
- First, set up the record / tape / 8-track you would like to record.
- Second, plug the cable from your stereo to the computer.
- Third, test the connection by playing the tape. You should see the green bar moving – that means the computer can hear the stereo.

- Fourth, press the record button on Garageband to test your sound.
- Fifth, record a few seconds (10-15), stop and then listen back. (Press spacebar or the play button once to stop)
- Sixth, if it sounds OK, delete your test recording and proceed to the next step.
- Seventh, if the sound is bad or nonexistent, check your stereo’s volume control and the cables.
Note: You want to have the green bar just barely going to the yellow during a loud section. If the signal is constantly in the red area, it will sound really bad. To adjust this, just turn up the stereo volume if it is too quiet or turn down the stereo volume if it is too loud, garbled or distorted.
iBook G4 users: Make sure the iMic (or other interface) is selected as Garageband’s input. If its not, you won’t hear anything when recording.
